Oral health is much more than just dental problems and gum problems after all oral cavity is one of the cavities of our body that connects external atmosphere to the inside of our body.

It goes without saying that oral health isn’t something to be taken lightly.

There are several health issues than can be caused by POOR ORAL HEALTH.

Normally, the defense system & good hygiene can be enough to keep the pathogens away but if the oral hygiene and care is compromised, the bacterial/pathogens can reach levels which lead to infections (e.g: tooth decay and gum disease)

Studies suggest, oral flora (bacteria) and the inflammation associated with periodontitis (gum disease), might play a role in some diseases.

Conditions linked to Oral health

Poor oral health are contributing factors to the following disease/conditions:

1. Endocarditis:

This is an infection of the inner living in the heart, its chambers and valves (Endocarditis).
This infection is caused by pathogenic bacteria spreading into the blood stream from other parts of the body, such as Mouth (Oral cavity).

2. Cardiovascular Disease:

The cause and connection is not clear, but some studies and research suggest that heart disease, clogged arteries and stroke might be linked the bacteria which are also found in oral infections.

3. Respiratory Infections

The bacteria from oral infection such as tooth cavities and gum diseases, can enter the blood strain and reach the lungs and cause infections such as pneumonia and bronchitis.

4. Pregnancy complications

Due to hormonal changes, during pregnancy, women with poor oral hygiene are at a risk of manifesting oral infections like gingivitis and periodontists, which can lead to pregnancy complications. Oral health issues are the mother, may cause premature birth and low birth weight.
